It's a terrible book. It provokes profound thoughts.
What decisions have I made? What is the power that makes us say:"I've no choice."?
All the value that has been instilled since our childhood told us what life should be like.
But is it what the world is really like? We may be moulded even before we realize it.

地球上的每一个人头脑里都有一块钢片，但是，如果你不时地躺下来，尽量保持静止不动，脑袋便会像电梯门一样悄悄开启，让一直耐心等待在周围的所有秘密思想进入电梯，揿下按钮，一直冲上楼顶。当那些隐秘之门关闭太久时，生活中真正的麻烦就来了。
人的一辈子也许会有那么一两回，你会听见一个精灵在暗中低语，你会听见发自什么东西中心的声音。这个精灵言辞锋利，说个不停，直到言中核心秘密为止。
通常，人们死也不愿意原谅别人。这真是一件难事。如果上帝明明白白地说“我要让你们在宽恕和死亡之间做出选择”，一定会有许多人径直去订购棺材。

Each of us has something within us which won’t be denied, even if it makes us scream aloud to die. We are what we are, that is all. Like the old Celtic legend of the bird with the thorn in its breast, singing its heart out and dying. Because it has to, it’s driven to. We can know what we do wrong even before we do it, but self-knowledge can’t affect or change the outcome, can it? Everyone’s singing his own little song, convinced it’s the most wonderful song the world has ever heard. We created our own thorns, and never stop to count the cost. All we can do is suffer the pain, and tell ourselves it was worth it. --Thorn Birds |
